Royal Spoonbill (Kotuku-ngutupapa) 77cm, 1.7kg

Spoonbills feed in shallow water by walking up and down tidal mudflats, swinging their heads from side to side to trap food in filters in the side of their bill. Spoonbills breed between September and February, laying 2 – 4 dull white eggs with brown blotches and make their nests in trees.  They are sometimes seen at Peach Point, for only one day, probably resting and feeding, before carrying on their journey.
