Silvereye (Tauhou) 12cm, 13g.

A small bird mainly green on the head and back, also a grey piece on the back, under parts a pinkish-brown and white under tail. There are many around during the winter especially if you put out some sugar water in a safe place.

First year birds pair up and usually stay together year after year. They lay up to 5 eggs with sometimes three clutches a year from September to February, staying together for 2 to 3 weeks after the chicks leave the nest.

Diet is mainly fruit and nectar, they also enjoy fat in an onion bag hung in a safe place.
