Spur-winged plover (38cm)
Originally from Australia ,these birds started breeding here around 1932. They now populate the country with some breeding each year in Omokoroa, on the grassy area opposite Victoria Keys. They lay between 1-4 khaki coloured eggs but once hatched the chicks are soon able to leave their nest , follow adults and finding their own food. Eggs are laid between June – November but beware as adults will dive at you if they see you near. The young are capable of breeding in their first year and may live for more than 16 years.
