Pied Stilt (Poaka) 40cm.
A black and white wader with very long pink legs and a long fine black bill. Many of these birds can be seen around Omokoroa Peninsular feeding on the mud flats. At full tide they form flocks on the Tinopai sandbank or at the Kaimai end of the golf course beach.
They breed on riverbeds, lake margins and damp pastures. Their noisy, persistent yapping occurs when feeding or flying, during both day and night.
