Pied Oystercatcher (Torea) 46cm

After breeding on river beds and farm land, mainly on the South Island, large numbers of Oystercatchers arrive back in Tauranga Harbour about the same time (March) as the Godwits leave on their migration north.

They are a black and white bird with red eyes and a strong red bill. At high tide they congregate on the Tinopai Sandbar and as the tide goes out they disperse to various areas of the harbour, often being seen feeding close to the beaches of Omokoroa.
